SPRING HAS SPRUNG... AND GARDENING HAS BEGUN!

REPORT BACK ON EVENTS THUS FAR

runners

Trail Running: The independent Schools Trail Running took place on 9 September in Grahamstown. Our pupils did extremely well in tough conditions. It was very hot! Congratulations to Sine Ndabambi  who recorded a second place in the Open Boys division and Gabriel Pearton who also came second in the under nine boys event. Ethan Darke took fourth place in the under 9 boys event and did very well to push through to the end despite being nauseous. Brin Jarvis was a star, coming 10th in the girls under nine race, despite being an under seven. Layla Clephane was equally awesome coming in just behind Brin in 11th place. Congratulations to all the participants and thank you to all the parents who transported children to the event. Thank you to Mrs Clephane and Mrs Marais for being the teachers in charge on the day.

Soccer: On Saturday 14 September, the Victory Soccer Festival is taking place. There will be an under 11 and an under 13 team participating. There were some warm-up matches played on Thursday 5 September. The under 11 team lost 2-1 and the under 13 team lost 4-1. By all accounts the teams played well, but they were a little out of form following the August holiday. The under sevens and under nines played matches against Victory on Thursday 12 September. Great fun was had with two matches being won and one match being lost.

SA JUNIOR SURFING CHAMPIONSHIPS

Congratulations to Rylan Jarvis and Rory Dace for being selected for the Nelson Mandela Bay Surfriders team which will compete in the SA Junior Surfing Championships in Jeffreys Bay between 24 and 29 September. This is very exciting news and we wish the boys everything of the best.

FAMILY CHALLENGE

Information regarding the "Family Challenge" has been sent out to all families. This is something exciting and positive which promises to be great fun. I encourage everyone to participate. No family is to feel under pressure to complete the challenges. If a family would like to substitute an evening walk around the block in place of a Parkrun (for example) then that will be quite fine. No Pressure! The whole idea is for families to spend more time together and the challenges indicated are the means by which families get to do this. Have fun! Don’t stress!

RANGERS AND RHINOS DAY

On Wednesday 25 September we will have a Civvies Day with the theme of ‘Rangers and Rhinos’. This is in support of Heritage Day (Public Holiday on 24 September) and National Rhino Day which is on 22 September. The children can dress up as game rangers or as rhinos. There will be a fee of R5 which will be collected and this will be donated to rhino conservation. This should be great fun!

SHOES

The Governing Body has made a decision that school “takkies” may now be white or navy blue, or a combination of white and navy blue.

THOUGHTFUL THURSDAY

A very worthy cause to be supported has been identified for “Thoughtful Thursday” until the end of October. October is cancer awareness month, so we want to collect items which will be given to children who are undergoing cancer treatment. A child who receives cancer treatment has to endure many uncomfortable and lonely hours in hospitals or clinics, so we want to help to make that time a little bit more bearable. We have identified just two items to collect: DOODLE PADS (SMALL SKETCH PAD) AND CRAYONS. Our children will do a bit of art work which will be stuck on the front of the sketch pad. Please contribute what you can in this regard. A small bundle of loose crayons will be quite fine; it is not necessary to go out and purchase a box of new crayons. The collection will start on Thursday the 19th of September.

SCHOOL SECURITY

safety

There are three matters relating to the safety of the children which I would like to address.

  1. Collection after sport: Sometimes children have to wait for their lifts after sport at the school. It is necessary that children who are waiting to be picked up, wait in a designated place. The designated place is on the grass in front of the toilets at the admin block. The children may also sit on the edge of the verandah. Children may not wander off to the play area, for example. This is to ensure that the whereabouts of each child is known.
  1. Attendance at sport: Children are expected to attend their sports practices. If a child is excused from doing sport due to illness or some other reason, this information needs to be communicated to the school office by the parent. This is to ensure that the teacher in charge of the sports practice knows exactly where all the children are.
  1. Children at Liquid Lines: Children go to Liquid Lines for swimming. Teachers are responsible for the children at the swimming pool. Teachers cannot be responsible for children who play outside of the Liquid Lines premises while they are waiting for their parents. This is an area of concern for teachers as they have a responsibility to children who are in the water. They cannot also be responsible for children outside. Parents are to please assist by ensuring that children are picked up timeously and are not left to play outside.
  1. Car Park Etiquette: The car park and driveway become very congested in the mornings and at home time.  The accepted etiquette is that vehicles leaving the premises give way to those that are entering.  Please drive slowly and carefully on the school grounds.

If I have my child to raise all over again

I’d finger-paint more and point finger less

I’d do less correcting and more connecting.

I’d take my eyes off my watch, and watch with my eyes.

I would care to know less and know to care more.

I’d take more hikes and fly more kites.

I’d stop playing serious, and seriously play.

I’d run through more fields and gaze at more stars.

I’d do more hugging and less tugging.

I would be firm less often, affirm much more.

I’d build self-esteem first, and the house later

I’d teach less about the love of power,

And more about the power of love
