As we head into the final sprint of 2018, the finish line is fast approaching.  One cannot but wonder where the year went.

Staff Appointments

  Kym Clephane Grade 0

It is with great pleasure that I can announce the permanent post for Grade 0.  Mrs Kym Clephane has already shown her expert teaching style and wonderful manner with the children in that class when she took over at the beginning of the term.  Therefore, we are delighted that she will be joining our Foundation team on a permanent basis.  We are currently finalizing our Intermediate Phase posts and Interviewing for our new Head.  I hope to be announcing these soon.

Parents Representative Election

SFB logo square

We recently held a Parent Representative Election and we are pleased to announce that Dr. Anton Boonzaier is your duly elected Parent Representative.  He will now be an active Board of Governors member, alongside Heather White as Chairperson of Parents Association, whose main role is fundraising.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank Mrs. Taryn Wilson for accepting the nomination to stand for the Parent Representative Election, as well as extend a thank you to those who took the time to nominate and to vote. A total of 63 votes were counted.

Aftercare

Due to swimming at Liquid Lines on a Tuesday, all children from Grade 0 to 7 will be at the pool.  Therefore Tuesday's aftercare will end at 1:45pm to accommodate those Grade 00 children waiting for siblings.  Aftercare on a Monday, Wednesday and Thursday will be until 3pm.

Interhouse Cross Country

Our first day back saw us starting with a bang as all children participated in the Interhouse Cross Country.  The weather played its part and team spirit was high, but it was Musselcracker who maintained their crown on the day.  They were closely followed by Yellowtail with Red Roman bringing up the rear.

Winners for each age group were:

Girls Under 7  1st Layla Clephane 2nd Brin Jarvis, 3rd Hayley Holmes

Boys Under 7  1st Callum Niven,  2nd Murray-John Boonzaier, 3rd Riley Wilson

Girls Under 9   1st Kate Joubert, 2nd Hannah Gerry, 3rd Micaella White

Boys Under 9   1st Noah Tovell, 2nd Gabriel Pearton, 3rd Lincoln Davids

Independent Schools Trial Running

This years’ hosts, Kingswood, arranged a stunning day at a Golf Club in Grahamstown, where the sun shone brightly and a warm welcome was received.  20 boys and girls travelled to take part and I was so proud of their manners, behaviour and performance on the day.  We managed to win 2 out of the 6 races, which is an amazing achievement.  Unfortunately, they were only able to record the top 10 finishers in each category due to the high number of participants.  The following achievements were awarded:

Boys Under 9 – 1st Ethan Darke, 2nd Noah Tovell, 10th Gabriel Pearton

Boys Under 11 – 1st Nicholas Niven, 7th Daniel May, 8th Sine Hlela

Girls Open – 2nd Ellla Boonzaier

Boys Open – 10th Sine Ndabambi

Grade 5 Camp

Grade 5 camp c

Our Grade 5 class went on camp on the Monday 1st October to The Boonzaier’s Farm Camp Adventure along with myself, Alice Kaunda, Mark May and Gail Brooker.  This was my first ever time going to the Camp and I was so impressed at the smooth running and wonderfully diverse activities that kept the class busy.  Saskia and Anton Boonzaier have really created something so special here and I think this is one of the best and unique experiences our children will have at school.  Another special thank you goes to Caryl and Bart Logie who joined us for interesting talks on Indigenous flora, the San people and of course entertained us around the fire with stories and songs.  The last thank you goes to the very special Grade 5 class who embraced every experience whole-heartedly and did not even let the rain dampen their spirits.

Grandparents Day

Grade 00 to 2 had a wonderful opportunity to host Grandparents and Grandfriends at the end of September.  They entertained all with rowdy renditions of "Eye of the Tiger" and "California Dreamin'" in their karaoke sing-a-long. They then enjoyed a leisurely picnic in the sun.

Mathletics and Reading Eggs

This term we have been lucky enough to trial these two online learning games.  Teachers signed up their classes either for home use or sessions in our brand new computer lab. Feedback from the pupils so far is that they have absolutely loved this new way of learning, time-tested educational basics and the programmes are engaging and fun.  Please complete the survey that will be sent home so we can decide how to move forward with these programmes.

Eco School

The Eco-School organisation have introduced 11 exciting and more focused themes this year. St Francis College have chosen "Health and healthy living" as our 2018 theme and are building on the last two themes of 2016 and 2017. We continually strive to give back to our community, and be aware of our impact on our environment.

Thoughtful Thursday

thoughtful thursday 2

This year we decided to support the same charities as 2017.  They have been super successful and the pupils fervently supported them all. In our first term, every grade was allocated a week where they brought in dry cat or dog food which was then donated to St Francis Animal Rescue. We also has Sue Rae Fox attend one of our assemblies and she explained what this fantastic independent organisation do in our local Sea Vista township as well as given some tips about caring for our pets. The food was well received and the children loved supporting this cause.

Our second term brought in colder weather so we decided to do a weekly vegetable collection for the Sea Vista Soup Kitchen run by Pastor Andrew Vena and his wonderful wife, Margaret. Again.  The St Francis College pupils brought in loads of fresh vegetables which Margaret used to make a healthy soup for the children and elderly community of Sea Vista, to keep their tummies full and warm during our cold winter months.

In our third term, we again supported Ukupha’s Baby Box initiative. Each grade was tasked to bring in supplies to make up a “Baby Box” for new moms of Sea Vista. Nappies, cotton wool, surgical spirits, blankets and teddies were just some of the few items that were donated.

I would like to thank all of the pupils, parents and staff members who have been so enthusiastic this year and who continue to support Thoughtful Thursday!
