Kyknet Choir Competition
The choir took part in the Kyknet Choir Competition, called "Sing in Harmonie". They did so well. They looked smart and they sang two songs beautifully. One was an Afrikaans song called 'Sonvanger'. The other song was called 'Glorious'. These were excellent choices. Our children performed exceptionally well in front of a big audience, bright lights and cameras. We are so proud of them. Well done to all the choir members and especially to Mrs Brown and Mrs Slabbert who coached the children for so many hours. Thanks also to Michelle Ohloff who accompanied the children on the guitar for the song 'Sonvanger'.

Grade 1 - Homeleigh Farm
The grade 1's visited Homeleigh Farmyard on Thursday the 13th of June 2019 on an excursion. They enjoyed a delicious picnic lunch, followed by a guided tour around the farm while information regarding habits of the various cute animals was given. The children were also able to feed the animals and even milk a cow! The fun day ended with a tractor ride through the fields.

Grade 2 - Outing to Pizza de La Rossco
Our annual Grade 2 outing to Pizza de La Rossco was a huge success, with the boys and girls enjoying a day at Mrs Anderson’s home on the Links. Classwork with a difference was followed by a walk on the golf course when the clouds and rain cleared momentarily to accommodate us. Although our delicious pizzas were the highlight of the day, the children all had a very practical lesson in fractions as they ate their way through the various answers. What a way to do our maths!

Grade 3 - Visit to the VW Museum
Our grade 3 class, along with 2 former classmates, Mrs Carpenter, parents and even grandparents, made the annual pilgrimage to the VW Museum in Uitenhage. As always, this is the highlight of their year! The children were taken on a factory tour and got to experience the birth of the VW Bug, or as the older parents call it, "The Volksie". They could play games and even had pictures taken with the cars in front of the green screen. There was just time for snacks, and then they had to head home again – unfortunately not in a new VW.

Grade 6 - Proudly South African
Well done, Ella, Alexander, Sine and Hayden! Our grade 6 class is collecting bottle tops for their beautiful South African flag. They have progressed very well, but still need green tops to complete their project. If parents could save the tops off cooldrink and milk cartons, that would help them tremendously.

Grade 7 - Greenwood Fundraiser
Our annual fixture vs Greenwood was the ideal opportunity to raise some funds for our Cape Town Tour. Moms and dads worked hard making Boerie Rolls on Friday and awesome egg ‘n bacon rolls on Saturday. Guests and College families enjoyed a burger evening at the Golf Club on Friday night. The Grade 7’s had donated some awesome prizes for the epic Bingo game. The Greenwood parents told us that this was an epic evening which their children looked forward to every year. The Grade 7’s did a great job calling the numbers. Well done Grade 7’s and Parents! We raised a good amount towards our adventure at the end of the year.

WEEKLY WONDER AND PRINCIPAL’S AWARDS
These new weekly awards have been introduced this term. Teachers nominate children from their classes for a Weekly Wonder Award. The nomination can be based on anything which has impressed the teacher, be it in the classroom, on the playground or on the sports field. The teachers hand in a small ‘Weekly Wonder’ card on which is written the child’s name and the achievement. This is then handed out in assembly on a Wednesday together with a ‘Weekly Wonder’ sticker. One of the Weekly Wonder winners is then given a ‘Principal’s Award’. There is also a sticker for the ‘Principal’s Award’, but, in addition to that, the recipient of the Principal’s Award also receives a R100 Wimpy voucher. These Wimpy Vouchers, for this term, have been kindly donated by the Governing Body Chairman, Mr Peter Kopke, who is the owner of the Wimpy at the Fountains Mall in Jeffery’s Bay. There have been four winners so far this term. They are: Sophia-Grace Blom, Hayden Wilson, Mimi Gamede and Ella Landman. Congratulations!

DAILY STAFF MEETING
At the beginning of this term, we introduced something new … a daily staff meeting. With the lay-out of our school, it is possible to go through a whole day without seeing some staff members. So, the purpose of the staff meeting is for the staff to touch base with one another and to make sure that everyone is fully informed of everything that is going on at the school. The staff meeting starts at 07:50 a.m. and is finished by 8:00 a.m. School starts at the normal time for the children. Apparently some children are being dropped off after 8:00 a.m. because the teachers are in a meeting. This should not be happening. Parents are to bring their children at the usual time, with the usual 8:00 a.m. starting time in mind.

Exams
The senior grades wrote exams during the first two weeks of June. These exam results will be combined with other assessments from the term and reports will go out towards the end of the term. I’m sure the children have earned their half-term break after working so hard for these exams!

Nursery School News (Mrs Lonsdale)
The second term is marching along so fast and with it we are seeing all the children growing and flourishing every day. The Nursery school has been a hive of activity this past month and I want to share some of the exciting things that have been happening:
Wellness day. R10 000 was what this amazing morning raised on the 25th May at the St Francis Links. A big thank you must go out to Le and her amazing team of Mums from the Nursery school and parents committee. Another thank you to all the mums who donated books, toys and baked, prepared and helped on the day. All of us in the Nursery school are so very, very grateful .
New paving We have new paving in the big play ground and it is so great to have it all done and looking neat. Thank you to Mr Osmond for organising, and making yourself available on the weekend's to get this much needed job done. Thank you to Bob Harcus for organizing the donation of the paving stones, and the many others who were involved in this project.
Outings On Thursday the 13th of June the whole school will be having their annual "Shapes" day, up at the St Francis Links. We leave the Nursery school promptly at 9.45am. On Thursday the 18th of July we will be visiting the Boplaas Padstal, between Humansdorp and J’bay, details to follow. Finally, a big THANK YOU to Alistair Brown for organising the repair of the see-saw ...The see-saw is a very popular piece of equipment in the playground with the children. Thank you.also to Ross Anderson who once again came to our rescue with ablution problems. Half term commences on Friday the 14th of June, the school closes at 1pm and reopens on Monday the 24th of June. Have a wonderful break and we look forward to the second half of a great term.

ARBOR DAY
We are planning to celebrate Arbor Day by planting a good number of trees on the school campus. We have already received four trees; two of which were purchased by the PA and two of which were donated. Warren Manser, through the Kromme Enviro Trust, is organizing several more trees. The plan is to plant a row of trees alongside the pathway which goes up to the classrooms. If there is any parent who would be interested in sponsoring one of these trees they are invited to contact Warren on 0767535768

GREENWOOD BAY COLLEGE DERBY WEEKEND – 31 MAY and 1 JUNE
This derby weekend was a great success. The scheduled netball and soccer matches took place on the Friday afternoon in cool but pleasant weather. Our netball girls did their best on the netball court, but the Greenwood teams proved to be too strong. Both the under 11 and the under 13 girls lost their matches. On the soccer field, our teams fared better. The under 11 team won their match 1-0 and the under 13 team drew their game 2-2. Both games were very exciting to watch. After the sport on the Friday there was a burger and bingo evening at the St Francis Bay Golf Club. This event was well supported and lots of fun. On the Saturday morning there were four hockey matches – under 11 boys and girls and under 13 boys and girls. Our teams competed tenaciously but were outplayed by the Greenwood teams. Nonetheless, it was a wonderful day of sport with all games played in the right spirit. Our visitors were most complimentary of our school and of the hospitality which they had enjoyed. So many people contributed to the success of the weekend. There were those who contributed a plate of eats for the teas; others helped with serving; there was the grade 7 tuckshop which had to be manned; oranges had to be cut up and served to the players; cups and dishes needed to be washed – so much needs to be done on an occasion like this. Thank you to everyone who contributed, worked hard and supported the school over these two days. Kouga Ford was also present on the Saturday morning doing a ‘Drive 4 your school’ event. Five Ford vehicles were available for test drives and for every registered test drive taken, the school will receive R100 from Ford. The final tally of test drives taken was 54. Thanks to Warren Manser for arranging this.

100 Club
The Governing Body of the school has initiated, and is in the process of launching, a new fundraising strategy called the ‘100 Club’. The idea of the 100 Club is to have a monthly event at which there will be cash prizes to be won. The 100 in the name is a reference to the monthly cost of R100 per event with 10 events scheduled for the year. Members are asked to pay R1000 up front for the 10 events. The first event is scheduled to take place on 27 June 2019 at the St Francis Bay Golf Club at 17:45. The aim of this initiative is to attract support from far and wide. Board members are appealing to their personal contacts with support coming in even from overseas. Parents and staff are invited to support this initiative and also try to recruit membership, but it has been made clear by the Governing Body that parents are not to feel overburdened by this initiative. The parents do a lot to support the school through the various events which the PA organizes. Parents and staff are welcome to join the 100 Club but must not feel under any pressure to do so. The 100 Club is open to anyone, anywhere in the world – an aunt, an uncle, a grandparent, a friend. Perhaps you know someone who would like to support the school in some way. This is the ideal vehicle for them to do so. Please see the attached letter of invitation and the application form.

THE WELLNESS DAY
The brainchild of Lé Keller, this unique event was held on 25 May at The Links Clubhouse. The main focus of the event was a panel of healthcare professionals who each spoke on their particular areas of expertise with the focus on children’s health. In addition to this there were stalls selling various items such as fresh fruit and vegetables, bakery products, healthcare products and homemade items. There were also games for the children to play whilst the parents were listening to the talks. The weather was very kind to us on the day and the event proved to be a great success. Thank you to all who planned the Wellness Day and who worked hard on the day.

THE MAIN PA EVENT FOR TERM 2
The main event which the PA is planning for this term is a SILENT AUCTION! The following announcement has been prepared by Joha Moolman the PA Chairperson. “The PA is super excited to announce our FUNdraiser for the second term….. We will be hosting our first ever “silent auction” at St Francis College. Basically a silent auction is an auction without an auctioneer and takes place over a period of time. The items to be auctioned can be displayed, or pictures can be posted on social media, and then bids are invited. The bids are written down and handed in in an envelope. On an appointed date the bids will be opened and the winning bids for the various items will be determined. The PA is planning to have a silent auction during July with a social event planned for an evening towards the end of July, when the winning bids will be revealed. We are super excited about this event and hope that it will result in a lot of fun and anticipation. However …. items are required for auctioning. The PA is appealing to our parent body and local businesses to consider supplying an item to be auctioned. At previous school auctions anything went from horse manure to accommodation vouchers, from free music lessons to free interior design consultations, from home baked cupcakes for school birthday rings to wine, from bright red headphones to floral arrangements, from home cooked meals to a load of firewood…. So you see basically anything that is sellable! Please consider supplying an item for our auction. Your support will be much appreciated.”

THE SCHOOL BUS
So what is the story with the school bus? Let me tell you all about it. During the school holidays we were negotiating a deal to trade in the Iveco bus and purchase a Toyota Quantum. The Toyota was delivered and was on display on the first day of term. However, the deal could not be concluded because it was discovered that the Iveco had a mechanical problem and the dealer did not want to give the trade-in price which he had originally offered. In the end it was decided to cancel the deal. The Toyota Quantum was returned to the dealer. The Iveco has since been repaired at a nominal cost and it has now been purchased privately at a better price than the dealer was prepared to give us. So, we no longer have the Iveco and we are looking for a good deal on a Toyota or a Nissan 16-seater mini bus.

School Security
Please note the following If a child is being fetched during the school day, due to being ill or having to leave school for some other reason, the office must be informed and the child must wait at the office and then be signed out when they are collected.. Children may not wait outside or walk up to the gate to wait for the lift. Any visitor to the school, during school hours, must announce their visit at the office. No visitor should walk to classes or interrupt teachers in their classes when the school is in session or during break times. If a parent is bringing something for a child or needs to see their child, they should work through the front office.
