Message from the Headmaster
What a busy five weeks we have had since school started! The children have been performing magnificently in the swimming galas; there have been mini-cricket matches for the under sevens and under nines; cricket matches for the under elevens and under thirteens; class outings have taken place for grade ones and grade threes and the nursery school; we have had a super family braai and - last but not least – a wonderful beach fun day. There has also been fun and excitement at the Eco-Club and adventure sports on a Wednesday afternoon. A lot of learning has taken place in the classrooms as well. After all this activity I’m sure everyone is ready for a few days of relaxation before we jump into the events of the second half of the term. First up after half-term is the Kouga Gala which is on Tuesday 3 March at Nico Malan. St Francis College has won this gala every time since the event started. Hopefully we will be able to do it again this year. At the end of the first week we will be travelling to Greenwood Bay College in Plettenberg Bay to compete against them in cricket and swimming. This is always a most enjoyable derby event. Two more galas follow in March – the inter-house gala on the 10th and the Splash-In gala for the grade 0’s to grade 2’s on the 31st. The big excitement for the more senior grades, before the end of the term, will be the Wacky Woods camp which is scheduled for 18 and 19 March. The grade sevens will spend two nights at the camp while the grade 4’s, 5’s and 6’s will spend one night at the camp. It is time to start thinking about tents and sleeping bags and who will be sharing with whom. From a PTA point of view, the big excitement before the end of term is the Golf Day due to take place on 13 March. This event promises to be tremendous fun and must not be missed! I wish everyone a good rest at half-term and I hope that this little bit of down-time will be just the boost that is needed for the excitement that lies ahead.

SFC Aquatics News - Haydn Holmes

In recent weeks St Francis College pupils have been going to galas, water polo matches and even river races, and their performances and results have been amazing. We have continued with our exposure at the C league galas in Port Elizabeth and the young crop of swimmers coming through make for exciting times to look forward to. We have also had a group of swimmers who for the 1st time over a full season have been swimming in the B league. This step up has seen all 5 of them, Micaella, Ethan, Ryan, Alexander and Gian all swim times that qualify them for the Top 8 in the province for that division. Special mention however should go to Gian who has not only qualified for top 8 but whose times see him qualify for national level 3 - which is is one tier below SA youth Nationals. Gian is the first in the the school's history to achieve this level. From May this year this group of swimmers will be joining a club to allow them to enter and be exposed to quality swimming more frequently, with the goal to have more St Francis College swimmers being noticed at a national level. We also had Hayley Holmes swim the Sunday's River Mile this past weekend. Hayley was the youngest competitor in the race. She finished 63rd out of 167 ladies and managed to beat her mom, Maria, by a second. Finally we have had our water polo team play in a league every Tuesday evening. This league has seen them play against schools like Grey and St George’s and they have been outstanding, surprising all the teams they have played against. The potential for this crop of players is unlimited. They have been great ambassadors for the school, showing a tenacity and fighting spirit that many of their opponents won’t forget for a while to come. There is a strong aquatics culture in the school with a few of the alumni flying the flag high. Hannah Praetorius and Ella Boonzaier continue to excel in water polo at their respective high schools. We wish Joss Hempel, who will be going to Olympic trials later this year, everything of the best.

Cricket News - Mr. Fortuin

Mini Cricket After playing their first matches, our mini cricketers are showing great enthusiasm and the numbers that want to play one of South Africa’s most popular international sports has increased. This bodes well for our school teams going forward. We have participated in two Mini Cricket Festivals, fielding two teams per festival.
Hardball Cricket Our U11 and U13 teams are playing in the Kouga schools’ league, with matches scheduled for Mondays and Tuesdays. Nico Malan High School is being used as our home field. U11 Our team played against Hankey Primary, winning by 23 runs. SFC batted first and reached 101 for 9 wickets in 20 overs. Troy Kennedy, at 53 not out, was our top scorer. SFC bowled out Hankey Primary for 78 runs. U13 Our senior team played two matches, notching up a win and a loss. Hankey was beaten by 30 runs, while we lost by eight wickets against Victory Christian School.
The players are looking forward to the remainder of the season, with upcoming matches against Gamtoos and Greenwood. Our grateful thanks to all parents who have been so willing to assist with transport. Your support and enthusiasm are always appreciated. We don’t like cricket – we love it!

Nursery School News (Mrs. Lonsdale)
Hope you are all looking forward to some important quality time with your little ones over the half term break. We have all had a wonderful first part of term one at the nursery school. Our new children have settled into their morning routine with the help of the other children that have been with us for a year or two. On Valentines Day we had the jumping castle up for the children to jump to their hearts content. We hope you all enjoyed the cards and flowers. They took great care in making these to show you their love. Half term is on the 27th February and we will be finishing at the normal time of 1pm. We all return to school on Tuesday 3rd March for the remainder of term 1. If you are clearing out toys, puzzles or books please remember we are always grateful to receive them and add them to the nursery school equipment. Hugs to you all Teacher Jane Teacher Cath “Excuse the mess but children are making MEMORIES”

GOLF DAY NEWS FROM THE PARENTS' ASSOCIATION
And so we are in full swing of 2020 and already at half term! Our annual Golf Day is coming up on the 13th of March. Last year, this was our biggest fund raiser and we would obviously like to reach the same success this year. Please could you take a look at the list below of where you can be of assistance. We will be sending out a return slip on the first day back after half term to be completed, along with the Junior Golf Comp Entry Form. HANDS ON DECK: We always need parents to assist in the set up & manning a hole on the day. Just an hour or two of your time would be appreciated. PRIZE SPONSORSHIP: We pride ourselves in having a large number of prizes at our golf day! The format of the day is a 4 Ball Alliance, so any prizes in groups of 4 would be great! We also welcome wine / whiskey donations, vouchers or goodies that we can use for prizes. GOODIE BAGS: Each Team will receive a goodie bag at registration. If you would like to sponsor something towards this, either privately or as a business, please let us know. We are expecting between 80 & 120 players. HOLE SPONSORSHIP: We have sold most of the Holes for the day, but there are a few still available. We will gladly put up your signage for you, and arrange for your hole to be manned if you would like to offer something at your tee box. A Hole sponsorship is R1000, And Hole 1 and 18 are still available at R1500.00. TAKE PART: As mentioned above, the Golf Day Format is a 4 Ball Alliance. Tee off times are between 11:00 & 13:00, and Halfway House is included in the entrance fee of R1400 per 4 Ball (R350 per player). If you would like to enter a team, Please contact the St Francis Bay Golf Club directly on 042 294 0467. If you have any queries or would like to put forward a donation, please contact the school on 042 294 01395 or Caroline on 083 229 9017. Thanks and have a lovely long week end The PA Team
