AGM

A successful AGM was held on Wednesday 6 February 2019. The new teachers were introduced and Mr Osmond spoke briefly about the appeal and the educational benefits of St Francis College.

Mrs Osmond then spoke about the importance of an active Parent Association. The PA should be aiming to raise funds for projects which add “fun value” to the school. Mrs Osmond urged parents to commit one year of their child’s schooling to serving on the PA. Thank you to all parents who volunteered to join the PA.

Mrs Webb spoke about the process of electing parent members for the school board. The PA chairperson will have a seat on the board as well as three additional parents. Four nominations were received for the three positions.

The evening was concluded with teacher / parent meetings in the various classrooms. Thank you to all parents who supported this important event on the school calendar.

Family braai

family braai

The 7th of Feb was a day with a howling easterly wind and Friday the 8th had a howling westerly wind! With such conditions there was not much enthusiasm on Friday afternoon for a family braai. However, the fires were lit at 5pm just in front of the hall in the shelter of the buildings. At first it seemed that not many people would come along, but by 6pm there was a good crowd of parents and children having a lot of fun. The wind subsided and a very pleasant evening was enjoyed by all. Once it was dark everyone started packing up and heading home. The event was a great opportunity to meet new friends and to spend time in excellent company. We look forward to the next one.

Up and coming events

Beach Fun Day and Half Term

The Beach Fun Day will take place on Thursday 21 February. Children are to be dropped off at the beach at Cape St Francis at 8 a.m. in appropriate beachwear with hats and copious amounts of sunburn lotion. Fun activities are being planned for the day, but no swimming will be allowed. Children can be picked up from the beach at 11:30 a.m. to commence the half-term long weekend.

Greenwood Bay College sports tour

Arrangements are being finalized for the Greenwood Bay sports tour which takes place on 1 and 2 March. The under 13 boys cricket team will play a T20 match on the Friday afternoon followed by five-a-side soccer matches for under 13 boys and girls in the evening. There will be a swimming gala on the Saturday morning for all swimmers from under 10 through to under 13. We look forward to this exciting trip.

Wacky Woods Camp

Planning for the Wacky Woods Camp, which takes place from 13 to 15 March, is well under way. The grade 7’s will spend two nights at the camp, while the grades 4 to 6 children spend just the night of the 14th at the camp. A letter, detailing arrangements, will go out soon.

Birding Outing

John Suckling of the Bird Club paid a visit to the school.  A birding outing has been arranged for 28 February 2019.  Grade 5, 6 and 7 children and their parents are invited to meet at the school at 6:30a.m on 28 February.  We will then drive a short distance to the Grasmere Road where John and his birding colleagues will help us to identify birds in that area.  The outing will be finished by 7:30a.m so that the children can be back at school by the start of the school day.  Children should wear their school clothes on this outing.  Mr. Osmond will be the teacher representative on this outing.  A letter with a reply slip will be sent out next week to determine numbers and availability of transport.

Academic programme

In addition to the many fun activities referred to above, there is also a lot of learning taking place. Grade 4 to 7 classes have been writing cycle tests every week. The last tests for the term are scheduled for the week of 18 March.

Board Election - Results

board elections

Thank you to the nominees who made themselves available to represent the parents on the School Board. The four nominees were Taryn Wilson, Anton Boonzaier, Michael Pearton and Warren Manser. Three seats on the Board are allocated to parents. A fourth seat is reserved for the Chairperson of the Parent Association (PA). The tallying of the votes showed that the three successful nominees are Taryn Wilson, Michael Pearton and Warren Manser.

The Parents' Association held a meeting on Tuesday evening. At this meeting Joha Moolman was nominated as Chairperson of the PA. Joha accepted the nomination and was duly appointed as the PA Chairperson.
The staff representative on the board is Mrs. Lyn Webb.

I am happy to say that our cricketers are developing at a good pace. We have played two matches against VCS with SFC winning both.

U13

SFC 115-5 after 20 overs
VCS 48 All out. Winning by 67runs
Best batsmen
Alexander Moolman 48 runs
Jaylon Geswindt 22 runs

VCS vs SFC
VCS 83 All out after 20 overs

We have decided to only play mini cricket in the last term as this gives us an opportunity to develop the upcoming players through the year.

Kind regards

Valentine's Market (Mrs. Anderson)

On Thursday our Grade 2’s held their annual Valentine’s Market in the hall.

They have spent weeks making bracelets, play-dough and cards as well as lots of sweet treats to sell in class.  Careful attention was paid to hygiene, packaging and marketing in order to host a professional-looking stall.

Well done Grade 2’s.  It was a very successful market with almost everything being sold out.

Nursery School News (Mrs. Lonsdale)

We are happy to say we are well into the first term and all of your children have settled with little problems.  Thank you to all the parents for being so brave!

We celebrated Valentine’s Day on Thursday and we decided to show the children that love for animals is also very important.  We asked all the children to bring some dog or cat food to school. We had the beautiful Sue Rae Fox from The St Francis Animal Rescue come to chat to us about how they look after the animals in Sea Vista.  I would like to thank you all on behalf of the nursery school for all your generous donations.

Outing Term 1
Our outing is on Thursday 21st February at the cove (weather permitting.  Letters have been sent home with your child.

Have a wonderful half term.  We re-open on Monday 25th February.

Keep safe
