Headmaster Highlights

The second term in an ISASA three term school is always a long term for staff, pupils and parents alike but it is certainly always action packed, varied and exhilarating and this certainly was the case at SFC in 2018. I will attempt to capture some of the highlights that we have experienced over the last five weeks of the term.

Staff

Unfortunately for the school, Mrs Laura Holdsworth (Grade 7 teacher) and Mrs Eva Skelton (Grade 0 teacher) have handed in their resignations. Their contribution to our school has been immense. Eva will stop teaching at the end of the term and Mrs Kym Clephane will take her place in the third term. Kym has a four year teaching degree from Stellenbosch University (1997 to 2000) and has experience as a supply teacher in England and taught at various schools in the UAE. Eva held a meeting with the Grade 0 parents and Kym was introduced. The Grade 0 post will be advertised countrywide for 2019. Laura will be teaching until the end of the year and her post will also be advertised. I can reassure Grade 6 parents that I will teach Grade 7 English next year and the subsequent gaps will be covered by the new teacher who will also be involved in private remedial lessons.

Board of Governors Meeting with Parents at the Links

st-francis-college-logo-mobilex2

On Wednesday 25 July, the Board of Governors met with the parents at the Links for an information evening. Please find attached the slides that were shared especially for those parents who could not attend. Essentially, the evening was a re-launch of our school as we celebrate our fourteenth birthday today. Parents’ concerns were addressed, our values/ mantra which govern our school were formalized and the technology and creativity hub team met for the first time. It was exciting to announce all the innovative technological advances that are in the pipeline.

May I remind you that I have an open door policy on Thursdays from 8 o’clock to 9 o’clock to chat to any parent who has any issue at the school or would like to chat and seek any advice. If you cannot make this time slot, check with Lucy in order to see when I am available and we will meet as soon as possible. Please approach teachers personally if there is a problem in the classroom and if there is no resolution, Kerry Bause looks after Grade 4 to 7 academics, Caroline Anderson Grade 00 to 3 and Jane Lonsdale on the nursery school campus. If all this fails, I am more than happy to meet in order to solve the problem.

Outings and Assemblies

A number of varied outings and special assemblies took place recently.

Musselcracker Assembly

Musselcracker Assembly

Musselcracker assembly was held on Wednesday 11 July. Renown bird experts John Suckling and Wessel Rossouw spoke to the pupils discussing the differences between birds and humans. The next day, both gentlemen took the bird watching club for an afternoon outing after sport.

Mandela Day

Mandela Day 100 from the Air

Our pupils contributed to Mandela Day by bringing blankets to school for people in need, baby/ childhood blankets for schools and older blankets for local animal shelters. I told the pupils about a couple of stories during assembly about how special Nelson Mandela was especially as regards his compassion for people.

Pupils then formed, together with their blankets, the figure 100 which commemorated Nelson Mandela's birth 100 years ago.

Grade 00 Gravity Trampoline Outing

Grade 00 Gravity Trampoline Outing

Our Grade 00 pupils enjoyed a fantastic outing to the Gravity Trampoline Park in Port Elizabeth. The only injury was to our teacher, Miss Carpenter!

Grade 2 Pizza de la Rossco

Grade 2 Pizza de la Rossco

The Grade 2 pupils spent the whole day at Mrs Anderson’s home where they made pizza and learnt about fractions.

Grade 1 and 2 Harbour to Harbour

Our Grade 1 and 2 pupils set off from Port St Francis Harbour and made their way along the beautiful coastal walk while collecting any rubbish they found and stopping to explore rock pools.  They walked to Granny’s Pool where they disposed of all the collected rubbish.

Grade 5 Pirate Cuisine

Pictured here is Kaia Forsyth who together with her Grade 5 peers in their English orals on pirate cuisine presented a menu consisting of Captain's cocktails, sugar scurvies, treasure in a mug, scallywag smores and not so sweet marshmallow booty amongst others.

Dog Show

The Incredible Dog Show

On Monday, Lloyd Bristow and his amazing dogs, Dogzcool, visited the school and enthralled our pupils with their tricks as well as Lloyd’s life lessons.

Grade 7 Otter Challenge

Our Grade 7 pupils completed the Otter Challenge from Tuesday 31 July to Thursday 2 August. This included cycling, paddling, hiking as well as various other physical and mental challenges. They were welcomed back enthusiastically by the rest of the school on their return on Thursday morning. Thank you to Mrs Holdsworth and Mr Fortuin for their invaluable contribution and huge accolades to Mrs Malherbe for her superb organization.

Thoughtful Thursdays

Thoughtful Thursday

We had a wonderful Thoughtful Thursday collection this week! Thank you again to parents and pupils!

News from the Nursery School

  Nursery School

We have had another successful term and I am happy to report that is has been a great term with lots of fun and plenty of growing by everyone.

We have to thank Mr Bause for all the great improvements.  We have new outdoor shapes for the children to climb and play on and also a couple of outdoor play boxes.  The children have loved the new experience and we will to continue to keep the positive experience going!

Thank you to all the parents for all their support with fund raising and Thoughtful Thursday and to the Class Mums for all the valuable help you give us teachers.

We had the Grade 7 pupils come to the Butterfly Class during the term to chat to the children about looking after fish in their fish bowl. They sang a beautiful song that they had made up and the Nursery School children really enjoyed the attention.

We had our school outing to the links with the theme ‘shapes and colours’. This was a first for us and a great success!

Just a reminder that drop off time is between 08h00 and 09h00 and pick up is at 12h30 and 13h00. This allows us to finish  off the day’s activities with story time without any interruptions. Thank you for understanding.

I hope you all received your children's reports and are happy with their progress through the term.  Please feel free to make an appointment with your class teacher if you would like to discuss your child’s report.

Have a wonderful holiday and see you all on the 4th September for our final year in 2018.

Teacher Jane, Chane, Cath, Monica, Oscarina and Connie

Chokka Trail Poster

Chokka Trail Run

The annual Bestmed Chokka Trail Run will take place on Saturday 11 August and Sunday 12 August, starting and finishing at the Cape St Francis Resort.  The main events will be run on Saturday, giving all participants the opportunity to enjoy the 5km Charity Challenge on Sunday.

Cape St Francis Resort is inviting all businesses, schools and charity organisations to pick a team of 4 to participate in the 5km Charity Challenge.  All 4 runners (or walkers) will have to complete the 5km distance in their own time, their individual finishing times will be added together to get to the team’s time.  So, with one fast runner you can make up for the walker who just would like to be part of it all.  No one will know who the winning team was, until prize giving!

The winning team will win a Bestmed hamper, a Team Building Event from the Cape St Francis Resort as well as R3000.00 cash for their nominated charity or school.

The entry fee is R300 for the team.  You can enter online on www.stfrancissport.co.za, and make sure they know who your charity/school is on race day.

The ultra (62km), marathon (42km), half marathon (23km) as well as a 10km is set for Saturday, and Sunday is reserved for the very exciting 5km Charity Challenge, which is a team challenge, to be run simultaneously than the Family Fun Run.  Shortly after, the focus will be on the juniors when they tackle their 1km and 3km races respectively.

Also new is the 42km marathon, replacing the 30km distance of previous years, which will include 6km of the Sand River dunefield.  A scenic 10km is replacing the 18km distance.

Walkers are welcome in the 23km, 10km and 5km distances.  With staged starting times it will be possible to see most athletes finish and support will be much appreciated.

Online entries are open on www.stfrancissport.co.za till 10 August at 12h00 and a late registration fee will be payable on race weekend.  Make sure you register with ORGSU on that website before you choose your race.  Full information on starting times, number collection and more is also available on the website.

Prize giving will be at 16h00 on Saturday, and 13h00 on Sunday.  Live music, great food and kids entertainment will be the order of the day at the Cape St Francis Resort.

NSRI - Station 21 Recruitment Drive

NSRI Station 21, St Francis Bay is hosting a fun family fishing day as a recruitment drive as well as a small fundraiser.

The day itself is a promotion for the station but is also during the Chokka Trail which routes through Port St Franics and is sure to be a hive of activity. There are some really great prizes and items up for grabs as well as some education on water safety during the competition time.  This will also be an opportunity to discuss opportunities and recruitment.
