NEWSLETTER AUGUST 2025
|
|
|
| |
As we draw the curtain (do you see what I did there đ) on another vibrant and busy term, this is the perfect opportunity to reflect on the many achievements, joyful moments, and shared experiences that have made this season so special at our school. From the quiet determination of the exams to the sparkling energy of our concert, our pupils have shown resilience, creativity, and a wonderful sense of community. Our Senior concert was a true highlightâfilled with music, laughter, and proud faces. Thank you to all the staff, parents, and the community who supported the children and helped make it such a memorable event. This term has also been a time of growth. Whether it was mastering times tables, exploring new books, or learning how to be a better friend, each child has taken steps forwardâand we couldnât be prouder. As we head into the holiday break, I want to wish all our pupils, families, and staff a safe, peaceful, and restorative time. We look forward to welcoming everyone back at the beginning of September, refreshed and ready for the exciting term ahead. Iâll leave you with a little thought to carry into the holidays: âChildren are not things to be molded, but people to be unfolded.â â Jess Lair Letâs continue to nurture happiness, curiosity, and kindness in every childâbecause when children feel truly happy, they shine in ways that light up the whole world.

Senior Art (Mrs Eksteen)
|
|
As always, our budding artists have been hard at work! The Grade 4s, 5s, and 6s have been exploring clay, molding some truly wonderful creations. Our Grade 6s took things a step further by using their clay figures as the centerpieces for some delightfully whimsical shoebox scenes. Meanwhile, the Grade 7s wrapped up their stunning local interpretations of Starry Night by Vincent van Gogh. Theyâve now begun learning about Pop Art and are already working on some bold and vibrant pieces, which theyâll complete in Term 3. Our students also got involved in the Eco Committeeâs art project. In the art section, students collected bottle caps and used them to create a striking mural of the St Francis College Otter â a true testament to creativity and teamwork! Well done to all our talented and imaginative students!

Practical Learning (Mr. Van Tonder)
Grade 5s were given the parts to an electric circuit this week, with no instructions. They had to figure out how to get the light bulb on by themselves. All groups were successful and felt very chuffed!

Foundation Phase News (Mrs Kopke)
We have come to the end of another busy, action-packed term. We continued with our winter sports program and learnt more about the importance of playing netball, hockey and soccer in our positions. Some of the Grade 2âs had the opportunity of playing soccer in their first derby day with the Under 9âs. It gave them a taste of what is to come. We collected soup ingredients as part of our contribution to Mandela Day and then measured them out into glass jars.

Grade 1 (Mrs Boshoff)
During the second half of this term we have focused on friendships, what ingredients make a good friend and talked about our pets. We shared pictures and information of our pets and did a survey on what pets the Grade 1 children have. We have been exploring different ways to measure length using non-standard measures such as hands, blocks, counters and paper clips. During Afrikaans the children have extended their vocabulary and had fun making their own âkaas en konfyt toebrootjiesâ!

Grade 2 (Mrs Kopke)
The Grade 2âs completed their Jungle theme by writing stories about jungle animals. We continued by speaking about Superheroes and discussed who a superhero is, what they use and wrote a superhero adventure story. We combined that with learning about having a growth mindset and being positive. We displayed our creative writing on the bulletin board where everyone could read our interesting stories. In maths, we learnt to measure items accurately with our rulers. We also learnt about why we collect data, how to interpret results and record it using a bar graph. We have started to read Afrikaans books and continue to enjoy more challenging English ones.

Grade 3 (Mrs Mosdell)
This term, our Grade 3 learners have been exploring the fascinating world of farming and farming processes. As a class, we agreed that farming plays a vital role in our community â without it, we wouldn't have the food, clothing, and everyday products that are essential to our lifestyle. Our recent focus has been on soil types. The children had the opportunity to study, observe, and collect various soil samples from our own school gardens, making learning both hands-on and meaningful. In Mathematics, we turned our attention to measuring capacity using cups, spoons, millilitres, and litres. This learning was brought to life when the children had to double and quadruple a jelly recipe â a deliciously fun lesson that was enjoyed by all! To extend and integrate our learning across subjects, the children were challenged to create their own comic strips. The task? To feature a quirky creature or special pet making jelly â with a surprise twist in the tale! The results were imaginative, humorous, and wonderfully creative. We ended the term on a high with our concert, where every Grade 3 learner shone brightly on stage. I couldnât be prouder of their hard work and enthusiasm.

Congratulations to Jack Moore - Grade 7
We are super proud of one of our Grade 7 students, Jack Moore, who raced in the second round of the FIA Karting Academy (Junior) in Germany recently. His dedication on and off the track is truly inspiring. Jack did very well in the heats leading up to the final, qualifying to start the final in 5th position. His skill and determination saw him hold 3rd position for 17 of 20 laps before ending in 9th overall due to engine troubles. What an incredible achievement!

ECD Term 2 Highlights (Teacher Dom)
What a joyful and busy Term 2 itâs been at St Francis College ECD! We welcomed new Butterfly families and Teacher Jade with warm smilesâand not even one lost lunchbox (yet). Itâs been heartwarming to see how beautifully everyone has settled in, even if socks occasionally go missing mid-morning.đŠ
đThe Bumble Bees zoomed through all things transport, now confidently identifying every truck, bus, and ânee-nahâ vehicle in town (your daily commute will never be quiet again). They also explored how to care for petsâso donât be surprised if your child now insists the family goldfish needs a bedtime story.
Our Ladybirds fluttered between bugs and beloved nursery rhymesâsinging all the old favourites and conducting some very suspicious bug hunts that had us checking pockets more than once.đ
đThe Caterpillars roared with wild animals and soared off into magical lands filled with dragons, unicorns, and other creatures too fabulous for bedtime.
đŠŠGrade 0s got busy with letter hunts and spotting sounds all around usâturns out a walk to the gate can be an exciting spelling expedition! And letâs not forget the glorious chaos of slime: squishy, sparkly, and absolutely everywhereâthank goodness it didnât follow them home!
This term also took off with a high-flying transport outingâthere were planes, trains (okay, just our imaginations), and plenty of little passengers excited for take-off!â We also celebrated the love and laughter of Grandparentsâ Dayđ„° (cue happy tears and extra hugs), and were blown away by your kindness for Mandela Dayâthank you for all the beautiful Jars of Hope!
Wishing all our families a restful, happy holidayâmay your coffee be hot, your floors stay slime-free, and your little ones sleep in just once. We canât wait to welcome everyone back for the final term of 2025!
Warm wishes, ECD

Drama News (Mrs. Natasha Brown)
The Grade 3 â 7 classes were very busy practicing for our Annual Concert. Every spare minute was dedicated to learning lines, dances and acting skills. Needless to say, all their hard work paid off as the 3 shows was a great success. St Francis Links hosted our show, providing our audience with a great setting. Our sincerest thank you to all their staff. I am extremely proud of every single child, especially the new children who just started the term, who were brave enough to appear on stage. My sincerest thanks to all the parents for all their help in lifting, arranging costumes, helping backstage etc. It is a huge production, and I couldnât have done it without all the help received from parents. The âsecret danceâ performed by our teachers were definitely a HIT! Even the children had no idea and were pleasantly surprised. We look forward to a lovely choir evening in October. The Grade 1 â 3 classes have started practicing towards this. Have a lovely holiday Natasha Brown
