Message from Acting Head, Barry Phillips
Halfway through 2021 - wow!! How fast has this year gone by already!! Before you know it, the Christmas decorations will be going up in the shopping malls. The covid pandemic continues unabated and unfortunately St Francis Bay has not escaped its hideous clutches. But the College has continued on its merry way and the children continue to learn and play in a unique and stimulating environment. The health protocols remain in place and the health and well being of the children remain our priority. But these wonderful young souls continue to thrive as if everything is normal. What a joy for all concerned!!

Grade 4
Concentration was the name of the game in the Grade 4 class this month as they wrote their very first exam of many in their school career. As they embarked on the unknown, nerves were frayed until they realized that exam is just a big word for test. Let's hope that the many hours of preparation and learning will reward them fruitfully.

What an exciting couple of weeks we have had! The Grade 5 learners have been making glue, maize meal as well as wafting trays of jelly under our noses as they learn about different mixtures in Natural Science. Their authentic treasure maps made one feel as though a treasure could be near!

Grade 7
While all these grades were being furiously academic, the highlight for the Grade 7 class was spending time doing community service. They went to Talhado and had a wonderful morning getting to know the kids, helping them in the class, preparing their cooked lunch and washing up afterward. What a fantastic opportunity this was!
We are very happy that our exam series has progressed smoothly; the children have prepared well and are giving their best effort each day. The holidays are around the corner and we cannot wait for this much needed break!

Grade 3 Letters to the President
Dear Mr. President, Most of the children in South Africa don't have food or shelter. I feel really bad about that. My school has a garden so we can try to donate some food. They have no schools or education. I thin that it's about time you made a plan. Please Mr President. They don't feel safe. I think that everyone should feel safe and have a home. I don't think I would last a day without school and my home. From, Hayley Holmes
Dear Mr. President I would like to tell you how most of the children in South Africa don't have food, shelter or education and medical help and it would be so amazing if you could help the schools buy windows, desks, chairs, stationery and fix toilets. We would love it if you could help. From, Emma Darke
Dear Mr. President I think that all the poor people in South Africa need food, shelter, water, toilets and they need to feel safe so please make sure that everyone is happy. You will be the best president ever if you do this. It would make lots of people very happy. From. Katie Combe
Dear Mr. President Some children in South Africa do not have food, shelter, education or medical help. It would be amazing if you could help. School can help but we can't do much so if you could help you would be so kind and amazing. And some children don't even have clothes. From Brin Jarvis
Dear Mr. President Hello! It's a pleasure to meet you. I decided to write this letter because today at school my teacher told me about what happened many years ago when the children had to fight for education but it seems to still be happening. I am talking about Youth Day. When I heard about it I felt so sad to know that a lot of kids don't have anything but you can change that. Don't do it for me but do it for the children. From Adam Nelson

Grade 2 News (Mrs. Kopke)
Our theme for the first part of this term has been about Superheroes. We discussed the characteristics of a superhero, using the ‘Growth Mindset’ terms to try to be more positive about ourselves. We also made furniture for our teddy bears at Eco-club and then had a teddy bears picnic. Our autumn leaf pictures were amazing, as we made a lion’s mane, a horses’ man, a squirrel and a hedgehog. The grade two learners have made great strides with their story writing and the way that they apply their phonics and spelling skills. Mrs. Kopke Grade 2

Davidko Siemens - The Green Guardian (Superhero Grade 2)
I am the Green Guardian. I look for villains that are robbing people. I became a superhero when I was driving the car which had a crash. I had my superhero toy in my hand so I became that superhero. My sidekick is Thomas the tiger. We help lots of people and animals. My enemy is Ice-Surfer. She freezes stuff. I wear special boots and a camouflage hat. I come when people call me.

James White - Captain Fast (Superhero Grade 2)
I am Captain Fast. I became a superhero when I was running through the forest. I tripped in a puddle of mud. The mud was radioactive so I became a superhero. I have super speed when I am running or flying. I help people in trouble but also animals. My sidekick is a mole. We make super plans to catch villains who are destroying the earth. We have friends that help us like superwoman.

Ruby Darke - Super woman (Superhero Grade 2)
I am super woman. My sidekick is Ice Surfer and my friends who help me are green guardian and power girl. We are kind to people and animals. I serve the world. I became a superhero when I was walking on the side of the road and I was bitten by a spider. My super powers are freezing, lazer eyes, throwing lightning and becoming invisible. When the north pole was poisoned, I made some plans with my sidekick. Fantastic flyer tried to unfreeze the snow. We froze it again and then we had a party. Don't fear when superheros are near.

Grade 0 News (Mrs. Eva Skelton)
The Busy Bee class has thoroughly enjoyed studying the ocean over the past two weeks. During our research we have explored the ocean’s properties, discovering the many creatures it is home to and discussing the effects of pollution on sea life. As part of our theme we decided to take an exciting trip to the seaside to explore the creatures of the rock pools. The weather could not have been better! The sun shone, the tide was low and the rocks pools were full of life. The children were thrilled to receive a new net and bucket on their arrival at the beach and could hardly wait to clamber straight into the rock pools and explore the tiny creatures of the ocean. We began our day with a rock pool scavenger hunt where the children were delighted to hunt for hermit crabs, sea urchins, limpets, oysters and star fish. The children enthusiastically filled their buckets with an array of colourful treasures, beaming with happiness as they hopped from pool to pool. After a hearty snack in the sun, a dig in the sand and a splash in the water, we were joined by Warren Manser who very kindly shared his knowledge of the ocean with us. Warren spoke about the different creatures we may find in the rock pools, what to look for, how we can take care of our oceans and even helped us explore beneath the rocks to find some special little creatures. The day was a great success and the children went home with sun-kissed cheeks and happy hearts.

A day in the life of a Grade 00 learner (Miss. Elizabeth Carpenter)
Learning numbers can be fun! These photos (see below) illustrate us making a number 6 with our bodies and a hula-hoop.
Every day is a special experience to learn something new and with us there is never a dull moment!
What better way is there to learn than with play? To make a six you need to "roll a hoop and make a loop". Grade 00 learners love to learn the unique rhymes that accompany every number they learn.
Every day is a gift and a chance to learn something exciting and new!

Bumble Bee and Ladybird News (Teacher Jane and Teacher Karen)
Our theme for the week was birds. We did many wonderful art pieces related to the different special of birds. On Thursday the children made toilet roll bird feeders which we hung up in the tree outside our classroom. We then sat waiting patiently for the birds to arrive. A very exciting day for the Bumble Bee and Ladybird children!

News from the Parents' Association (Mrs. Heather White)
Our fundraising initiatives have taken the backseat this term with Covid regulations and keeping our school’s safety as a top priority. So we’re going to have to think out of the box a little to keep the fundraising flag flying. We are still working towards our Spring Festival in September, and the annual Golf Day in November, let’s hope these popular events can go ahead!

Recipe book 2021
| |
|
From Tuesday, 6 July, when we return from half term, we will start the St Francis College Recipe Book initiative. This was last done in 2008, and those that were part of the school then all have fond memories of the published book. Please can your family choose a favourite recipe to be featured in the book, we will send out further e-mail communication regarding information required. We would love to feature some recipes from the St Francis Bay Restaurant community, at a fee of R500.00 each, which will allow to cover the costs of the printing, as well as provide an advertising opportunity for their business. If anyone is involved in the town’s restaurant industry, or knows someone who would love to be a part of this project, please let Heather know on 082 292 5909.

The Final Countdown for the 100 club
The 100 Club has been running for two years and it is now in its final stretch for 2021. It will be closing down after the November draw. To you, who have been such great supporters, a big “thank-you”. The 100 Club has raised over R 100 000 for the school, and we have had a lot of fun along the way. Most subscriptions end in June, so we are asking you for one final time, to support the College. Please pay your R500 for the last 6 months and join us for the remaining monthly draws. Banking Details for deposits St Francis College Account: 28 141 1158 Standard Bank Branch: 050015 Reference: Your name 100 Club The Joker Draw has been the main attraction at the get-togethers. Should the Joker prize not be won before the draw in November, we will have multiple number selections until the money is won in November. The pot currently stands at R7500, so attending the draws could be very worthwhile. Once again, thanks for making the 100 Club such a success. We will come up with a new idea for 2022 so watch this space!
