NEWSLETTER 7 OCTOBER 2021
FROM THE HEAD - MR BARRY PHILLIPS
The weeks keep flying by and we are now nearing the final lap of the year. This half of the term ended on a high, with the Inter House Athletics meeting. The weather did mess us around, but we could not have asked for a better morning on Tuesday. The children had so much fun and the parental support was fantastic. At such an occasion, there sometimes appears an unlikely hero. During one of the middle-distance races, one competitor found the going really tough and was on the verge of tears and giving up. Then one of his House teammates got up, went up next to him, encouraged him and helped him complete the race. Whilst this was happening, his whole House shouted in unison even more encouragement. Our hero displayed enormous care for his fellow teammate and set the tone for the rest of the meeting. This random act of kindness blew all of us watching away. This is what this amazing little school is all about and I am proud to be a part of it.

INTERHOUSE ATHLETICS - GRADE 1 TO 7
There was lots of cheer in the spring air as the Grade 1 to 7 pupils ran onto the field for the 2021 Interhouse Athletics. Track events included a short sprint, a middle distance and a long distance. Field events included Shot put, Ring Toss, Cricket ball and Long Jump for the seniors. We also saw the introduction of Frizbee Golf which seems to be a popular sport for some. The St Francis Spirit was strong as teams supported and cheered each other on. Senior and Junior relays ended the festive day with Musselcracker taking the win by a very narrow margin. Well done to all the children who participated. A special thank you to the teachers, Joshua Richardson and Mr Warren Manser who made the day such a success!

Grade 6 - Garden Competition Winners
The Grade 6 learners were the fortunate winners of the school gardening competition. Our prize was a morning with nature lover, Mr. Harry Bateman. They were taken to the wildside in Cape St Francis where the children learnt valuable survival skills. They learnt how to make a fire, how to purify water and what can be scavenged and eaten from the rock pools. We even cooked and ate what we collected!!! The children truly learnt so much.

GRADE 7 PREPARE FOR THE ANNUAL OTTER CHALLENGE

The Grade 7s are eagerly preparing for their Otter Challenge which takes place at the end of October. They have set up their tent and checked for any tears or missing poles. In the next couple of weeks Dave Louw has offered to assist with teaching the Grade 7s paddling techniques and helping them be comfortable in their canoes. The Otter Challenge is a 3 day hike, paddle and cycle which takes place around our beautiful St Francis Bay.

Grade 0 (Mrs. Eva Skelton)
Wow! We are speeding through term three at an alarming rate!!!!! Can’t we just stop that clock!!!!!! There is so much more to be done and so little time. I can’t quite believe that this is our final term together as a class. We have had an exciting final term so far and so much more to look forward to. This term we have enjoyed a variety of different themes, all of which have been both exciting and full of messy fun! We began our term with Arbour Week where we invited a guest speaker, Carol Logie to inspire us with her fantastic knowledge on our surrounding trees. This was followed by the arrival of spring, which allowed us to welcome some new pets into the class to watch their growth, from tadpoles to frogs. Spring is the perfect time for planting, so we grabbed our garden gloves and got messy with our garden. We have planted a new waterberry tree in our mud kitchen and have experimented with re-growing kitchen veggies. We have planted seedlings and reaped the benefits of our outside garden, where all our blossoms have began to bloom. Learning has been messy, exciting, loud, and most importantly, fun this term. Happy half term everyone!

Grade 00 - 'Show and Tell' (Miss. Elizabeth Carpenter)
Every Monday the Grade 00 children are so excited to share their beloved "treasures" and sometimes even a furry little friend comes along too. It is a little glimpse into their world and what they find fascinating and interesting. I've been amazed with some of the things that have been brought in. This is their chance in the spotlight to divulge their weekend news and show off what they have brought in. They put great effort and thought into each item that they bring to school and we have been captivated every Monday by the variety. Even some lucky, fuzzy friends have been the talk of the morning. We've had hamsters, Hammie and Marshmallow, also Michaelchoccly, and bunnies, that is just a cuteness overload for us all and huge smiles all around. It's a delight on a Monday for the Grade 00s when it is "SHOW AND TELL"! ‘Show and Tell’ gives children an opportunity to stand up in front of their friends and speak about a topic that interests them or to share something that they love. It builds confidence and helps children develop effective communication skills. What a fun way to learn!
A special word of thanks to our co-operative and cute creatures for their special appearances.

Music and Drama News (Mrs. Brown)

|
As the end of the year approaches, we start practising our Christmas songs. The children are amazed that we start so soon and can’t comprehend the fact that we are singing Christmas carols already! But as you know, when tests, camps and exams start, there is hardly any time for practising. So if your children come home, humming to famous Christmas tunes, you know why. We are practising towards something exciting, but further details will be revealed in due course. Our new drama club, as part of our extra mural programme, is proving to be a great success amongst the eager little actors and singers. We are working on a funny Christmas script. I love to see the story develop as the children come up with various ideas. The Grade 1 and 2 classes are still busy learning recorders. The “screeching” of the instrument is less noticeable now and they’re actually playing some famous tunes. A reminder that the recording of the talent show is available. If you would like a copy, please send a USB stick to me, clearly marked and I will copy it for you. Remember – Music is a piece of art that goes in the ears and then straight to the heart. Music greetings Mrs N Brown

RECIPE BOOK UPDATE
We are well on our way to working through all the fabulous recipe submissions and are nearly ready to put the book together. Thank you so much to everyone for their contributions, it is going to be a great publication. We are setting the book up in a journal style, and are very excited about the finished product. We will run a pre-order system for all school parents, which will happen during November. The book is set to be available from the first week of December, and we hope to have them on sale at various outlets throughout the village in time for Christmas shopping! They will be priced at R150.00 per book.

ANNUAL GOLF DAY AT ST FRANCIS LINKS SUNDAY 14 NOVEMBER 2021

We have also secured St Francis Links for our annual golf day this year. They suggested we run the event on a Sunday, making it a more inclusive, family orientated program of events, with a number of child activities included! We are also hoping to set up a fun event for the non-golfers in our school community. More information will be circulated in the coming weeks. The Golf day will be held on Sunday, 14 November, and will end with a lunch time prize-giving. We are also going to be appealing to the St Francis College Community for prize and hole sponsorships, all of which make this day a success.

"BULL PATT" RAFFLE AT THIS YEAR'S CHRISTMAS MARKET

At this year's school Christmas Market, we are going to run a 'Bull Patt' raffle. The Farmers at the School have very kindly agreed to offer one of their Bulls as part of the fun. How does this work?? A selected area of the farm will be cordoned off and the field will be divided into squares. You will be able to 'buy' a square (this can also be done as a group). On the evening of the 4th of December, the bull will be released into the cordoned off area, and whichever square it makes its deposit on, will win a cash prize. Once we have ironed out all of these details, we will communicate with you.

THOUGHTFUL THURSDAY - AFTER HALF TERM
As you know we have an ongoing project called “Thoughtful Thursday”, which is designed as an outreach programme, to supply items for the needy in our community. This term’s project will end at half term. For the rest of the term, we will be promoting a ‘Christmas Bucket’ for our assistants and cleaning staff. We will be collecting items for the buckets over a period of 6 weeks. Each class will have a chance during that time to bring designated items for the bucket. Therefore, your child will only be involved in one week’s activity. Items such as sugar, soup, biscuits and toothpaste will go into the bucket. For the final two weeks, we would request small cash donations, so that we can fill up any buckets that are not full. Once again, this is an entirely voluntary exercise, but I am sure you will agree, a most worthwhile one and the staff will be most appreciative. More details will follow soon.
